Production expansion at DSM Nutritional Products in Sisseln, Switzerland.

In September 2019, the ARA Fast Track project of the Dutch company DSM was launched in Sisseln (Switzerland). The aim of the project is the temporary expansion of the existing wastewater treatment plant, which is reaching its load limits due to the planned production expansion.

DAS reaches an important milestone in the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant.

The Sissel site is now home to the world’s largest production facility for vitamin E. In addition, many other dietary supplements and additives, such as vitamins, pharmaceuticals, substances for the cosmetics industry, carotenoids, and folic acid are produced here.

In order to ensure a quick adaptation of the wastewater treatment plant to the new production situation, the Dresden-based environmental technology company DAS Environmental Experts was commissioned to build a two-stage MBBR plant (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor). Thanks to the high buffer capacity of the tanks, this solution can react flexibly to strongly fluctuating wastewater volumes and loads. Due to the low space requirement, it is also possible to build an additional plant on the available site and thus to react to a further, future increase in production.

In addition to the two series-connected floating bed reactors, in which the TOC (Total Organic Carbon) is broken down, the planned plant consists of a flotation unit for the separation of the excess sludge, a sludge dewatering and filling plant as well as a blower station and exhaust air purification.

Successful installation and commissioning despite adverse conditions

Despite the limitations of COVID-19 and adverse weather conditions, the mechanical completion was so far advanced on July 20, 2020, that the first part of the plant could be put into operation. This was followed by further commissioning in the flotation and sludge press area and the final performance run.

After a project duration of approx. 13 months, the modernization and expansion of the wastewater treatment system was completed by 5.11.2020. Together with DSM, DAS Environmental Expert GmbH is now able to look after the plant. An efficient and cost-saving service can also be guaranteed in the future by means of online remote maintenance.
